Chiang Kai-shek had as many as 34 presidential residences throughout Taiwan, and five of them sit here in Daxi, and they are: Fuxing presidential residence in Mt. Jiaoban, the presidential residence at Cihu, the garden presidential residence in Mt. Jiaoban, and the presidential residence in Touliao, then here—Daxi presidential residence of Daxi, converted from the Assembly Hall of the Japanese Colonial Period.

Upon its conversion into a presidential residence, this place often doubled as a sanctuary (a summer getaway, a birthday banquet hall), a reception hall for foreign visitors and guests for the late president. Due to its historic significance, locals mostly remember the residence as a heavily guarded manor. The military police were stationed in the Wude Hall on the side, adding to the somberness of the place.

Nonetheless, this place is filled with many shared reminiscences between the former head of state and locals: at times, Chiang and his wife would enjoy a stroll in Daxi Park; schoolchildren from the nearby Daxi Elementary School had entered the presidential residence with a special performance on Chiang’s birthday.
