Japanese dormitory units are dictated by a variety of configurations and codes, and this building falls under the “type-C official residence” category, which in general is a duplex sized at 13 to 15 ping’s.

But the most distinctive feature of this building, is the conversion it went through after WWII. The dividing wall between the two residential units was removed and t is now one unit.
The floorplan, however, still reflects faithfully its original, perfectly symmetrical layout. Step into the unit and you will realize that only one foyer, one bathroom, and one kitchen still remain, when there are supposed to be two. The corresponding units are likely used as storage.
This adaptation echoes the way that the changing times define the use of the Japanese residential units.
