In 1807, in the small town of Chiavari in northwestern Italy near Rivarola, local craftsman Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi was inspired by French chairs to develop a lightweight and versatile chair. Using his expert lathe-turning skills, Descalzi carved circular ridges into the chair's components, which not only decorated the chair but also enhanced the structural strength of its delicate materials. The seat, woven from fine rattan, provided both excellent support and added an element of refined beauty. The overall design was elegant, finely structured, and utilized materials in perfect proportion.
Thanks to its versatility and ease of transport, this style of chair, known as the Chiavari Chair, quickly became popular worldwide and established itself as a specialty of the Chiavari region, named after the town. Many local workshops and designers continue to produce similar versions of the chair, such as the ""Three Arches Chair"". Today, Chiavari chairs are frequently seen at important events across the Western world, with different colors serving different purposes. White or natural wood Chiavari chairs are often used at weddings, while gold or silver versions are common at state banquets and formal dinners.
