The Model 670 Lounge Chair and Model 671 Ottoman, collectively known as the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, rank among the most iconic designs of the 20th century. Drawing inspiration from the traditional English club chair, Charles and Ray Eames aimed to create a piece that, like a well-worn baseball mitt, would feel invitingly warm and exceptionally comfortable—an embodiment of luxury melded with modern design. Although the Eameses devoted much of their career to producing affordable furniture, this lounge chair and ottoman remain one of their most celebrated contributions to the high-end market.
The 670 Lounge Chair is composed of three distinct sections—headrest, backrest, and seat—each formed from five layers of molded plywood adorned with two layers of rosewood or walnut veneer. The walnut version, in particular, is cherished by modern design enthusiasts for its rich, warm woodgrain and understated elegance. Additionally, the Eameses incorporated their signature shock mounts into the design, providing superior comfort and stability.
Today, the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman continue to be produced by Herman Miller and Vitra and are still highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. They are held in the permanent collections of renowned museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago, ensuring their status as timeless classics in the history of modern furniture design.
