In 1958, Danish furniture designer Børge Mogensen created the famous Spanish Chair after traveling through Spain. He drew inspiration from traditional Spanish chairs influenced by Islamic culture, particularly their wide armrests, which served practical functions such as holding books or drinks. Mogensen preserved these functional features while modernizing the chair’s overall design, removing unnecessary decorative elements to achieve a more minimalist and utilitarian style.
Initially, the Spanish Chair was crafted primarily from oak, a strong and durable wood, paired with leather seats and backs to display both craftsmanship and elegant design. Over time, a walnut version was introduced, adding a contemporary touch and offering more material options. However, the early designs remained centered around oak, reflecting Mogensen’s commitment to traditional materials and his belief in functional simplicity.
Since its debut at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition in 1958, the Spanish Chair has been produced by Fredericia, becoming one of Mogensen’s most iconic pieces. It continues to be admired by design enthusiasts and collectors alike, establishing itself as a classic in the world of furniture design."
