Norwegian furniture design, distinct from the rest of Scandinavia, places greater emphasis on functionality and industrial mass production. This focus has given rise to a unique design aesthetic in Norway. One of the iconic pieces of Norwegian furniture design from the 1970s is the Falcon Chair, designed by Sigurd Ressel.
The original Falcon Chair was introduced in 1970, featuring a metal frame with leather seating suspended by metal rings, giving it a hammock-like floating sensation. This innovative design was well-received at the time, but the metal frame was heavy and not easy to transport.
In 1974, Ressel redesigned the Falcon Chair, replacing the metal base with laminated bentwood legs. This change made the chair lighter, more portable, and easier to package and transport. The redesign significantly boosted its popularity in key markets such as the United States, Germany, and Japan. The Falcon Chair became a classic example of Norwegian modern design, combining functionality with elegant, flowing lines that reflect the country's approach to practical yet stylish furniture design."
