The Thonet rocking chair was first created in the 19th century by the company’s founder, Michael Thonet, who designed the first model during his lifetime. After his passing, the Thonet company continued to design similar rocking chairs, which have since become iconic. This chair utilized Thonet’s pioneering bentwood technique, where wood was heated using steam and then bent into elegant, flowing curves. The technique not only highlighted the beauty of wood but also allowed for the creation of lightweight, durable furniture. The chair also featured handwoven cane seats and backs, adding to its sophisticated appearance while ensuring comfort and sturdiness.
This piece is a prime example of the successful fusion of industrial production and craftsmanship, representing a significant innovation in 19th-century furniture manufacturing.
