The Butterfly Stool, designed by Sori Yanagi, showcases an elegant combination of minimalist structure and organic form, drawing inspiration from both Western minimalism and Japanese folk art traditions.
In the 1940s, Yanagi had the opportunity to travel with Charlotte Perriand, a renowned French designer, during her visit to Japan. As a student accompanying Perriand, Yanagi was exposed to Western design philosophies, which sparked his interest in designing chairs, a concept traditionally absent from Japanese culture.
To achieve the stool's simple yet graceful shape, Yanagi employed the molded plywood technique pioneered by Charles and Ray Eames. The stool is composed of two symmetrical “wings” connected by a single brass rod, evoking the image of a torii—a traditional Japanese gate—symbolizing strength and permanence.
This Zen-inspired stool was named the Butterfly Stool and won the Gold Medal at the 1957 Milan Triennial. It was later included in the Louvre Museum's permanent collection, becoming an icon of modern design. Originally conceived as a seating option, the Butterfly Stool's versatile design allows it to function as a coffee table, shoe bench, magazine rack, or bedside table, depending on how it is placed, highlighting its multi-functionality.
The Butterfly Stool remains a celebrated example of the fusion between East and West in modern design.
