The name “Round-Back Chair” comes from its circular backrest design, resembling a full circle. In the Song Dynasty, it was called ""Kaolao style,"" with ""kaolao"" referring to a large, round basket woven from willow or bamboo, named for its similar shape. By the Ming Dynasty, this chair style was termed a ""round chair"" in the Sancai Tuhui. The Qing Dynasty Ministry of Works Standards later documented the chair's construction, showing minimal changes from the Ming-style round-back chairs. This design remains widely produced and used today, cherished for its ergonomic comfort: the armrests curve naturally downward from the backrest, allowing users to rest their arms and elbows with ease.
This round-back chair’s design is simple yet elegant. The uprights above the seat are circular, while below, they transition to an outer-round, inner-square form, lending a refined structure. The front and sides feature decorative sawtooth strips, with an overall understated style. Only a small cloud motif is carved between the backrest and armrest support, showcasing the basic form of the round-back chair—a harmonious balance of functionality and aesthetics.
