The official’s hat chair, also known as the armchair, can be traced back to early depictions in Dunhuang murals from China’s Northern and Southern Dynasties. Through development and refinement during the Tang and Song Dynasties, the structure of the official’s hat chair became well established by the Song period. By the Ming Dynasty, scholars and artisans enhanced its aesthetic qualities, and the Ming-style official’s hat chair became a quintessential example of Chinese classical furniture, celebrated for its elegant shape and smooth lines. This design has endured for four to five hundred years and remains iconic today.
This high-back official’s hat chair is crafted from delicate wood, featuring graceful curves in every component—from the headrest, columns, and back panel to the armrests, side stretchers, goose-neck supports, and legs—all hallmarks of Ming-style furniture. The chair’s tall, elegant form conveys the dynamic spirit and exquisite craftsmanship of Ming design.
A unique aspect of this chair is its headrest, designed in the “four-outward protruding” lantern style, while the armrests follow the Southern official’s hat style without protruding ends. Although this combination was documented in Ming-era prints, it is rarely seen in actual furniture, adding to the chair’s rarity and historical significance.
