The Pagoda, sitting behind Chiang’s residence, was built in the Japanese Colonial Era. It was previously known as Pagoda Naliang (“Enjoying the Cool”), and a must-see when the Japanese royalties visited. It was called Pagoda Xiaosi while Chiang resided here. Upon his passing, it was renamed “Pagoda Zhiqing,” after Chiang’s school name. Photographs from that period of time show the former president enjoying the view, meditating, or hanging out with his family over a meal in the Pagoda.

This was where many foreign dignitaries were received, and where key national matters were resolved. Chiang was notified of the news here in the Pagoda in 1971, when Taiwan backed out of the United Nations.

On October 26, 1971, we followed Chiang to the Daxi Residence. On that day, the United Nations welcomed People’s Republic of China into its fold. The United States notified the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an urgent telegram. I was on duty when the military attachés hurried inside with that piece of telegram. Chiang was sitting quietly in the Pagoda as the attachés delivered the news, “the PRC is now a member of the UN, and we backed out as a result.”

Chiang removed his beret and flung it to the floor. His face streaked with angry tears. (Narrated by Ying Shun-ren/Volume I of the Interview with President Chiang Kai-shek’s Aides)
