The wide-open space that we look out from the back of Martial Arts Dojo was occupied in full with the dorms’ annexed structures. As years went by, two additional basements right below the structure had to be built to accommodate the number of inhabitants.
Upon the restoration of the Ecomuseum, the aboveground additions were demolished to give the Wude Hall back its spacious view in the rear, but the additional basements were preserved.

Based on stories told by former inhabitants, the additions were used as restrooms, a kitchen, and storage. This distinctive architectural feature adopted by the original inhabitants to accommodate the terrain gives us a vivid picture of their lifescape, and mirrors the interplay between the inhabitants and their surroundings.

(Do you spot the lovely door in the rightmost photo? It was handcrafted by the inhabitants and still beautifully preserved in the Multifunction classroom to the side. Keep an eye for it when you head inside!)
