Daxi townspeople share a miscellany of versions on the existence of an underground tunnel near the Assembly Hall. According to interviews gathered from A Conclusive Report on the Exhibition Studies and Planning and Design of the Daxi Assembly Hall and Chiang Kai-shek’s Residence, we curated four editions:
1. The underground tunnel was the evacuation pathway for the wealthy Lin Ben-yuan Family that exited out of the old wharf connecting the playground fronting Daxi Elementary School.
2. The tunnel runs the length between the Assembly Hall and the bomb shelter exit underneath the ridgeline. The exit was used as a landfill in the Japanese Colonial Era.
3. The archives of the Presidential Office also include budgetary planning and a floorplan of a bomb shelter and an evacuation tunnel. At the time, the project cost close to NT$700,000 to build. The tunnel ran a length of five to six hundred meters leading to the riverbed. The bomb shelter was likely set up to facilitate communications with Chung Cheng Institute of Technology, National Defense University, located on the opposite embankment of the river to expedite evacuation or support missions for the presidential residence.
4. President Chiang’s guard, Tu Yu-jing explains that the tunnel was set up for presidential security. The area encircling the sentry under the bishop wood was the tunnel entry. An exit sat by the embankment side of Daxi Bridge. Tu had escorted president Chiang to tour the area, and carried the probe light for him. The tunnel was closed up with cement bricks in 1974 or 1975. It is tricky to pinpoint the exact location of the exit; this version of the claim is also inconsistent with the records in the Presidential Office archives.
