There have been numerous guesses about the function of the mysterious structure in the corner of the Estate: a sentry, a restroom, the entry to an underground tunnel. No credible documents have been found to corroborate these claims.

A respected local elderly, Yang Guo-bin, described the architecture as a men’s restroom dating back to the Japanese Colonial Era:

“This was a men’s restroom in the Japanese Colonial Era, a restroom that was surprisingly pretty located by the cliff and built with concrete. It was of course used by men, exclusively. There were urinals, and just one small cubicle for Number Two. The restroom was installed there to keep off from the rest of the residential area. We visited that place sometime later and it was converted into a garden."

President Chiang’s personal guard, Tu Yu-jing recalled this architecture being an entry to an underground tunnel:

“It was an evacuation tunnel that led to a place beneath of the creek. It’s not there anymore because it’s been shut down. (“Could the tunnel be accessed from this fort?”) Yes, it could. I toured it once, right before it was closed up. It was about five to six hundred meters in length. Not very long. It was assumed to be a restroom. It’s now completely closed up."

According to historic records still extant, when the Bureau of Cultural Affairs of Taoyuan commissioned the Department of Architecture of Chungyuan Christian University (An Inventory and Digitized Archival of Historic Architecture in Taoyuan County) in 2002 to renovate the architecture, the outer wall of this architecture was already tiled up and used as a restroom.
